To make my locks curly-looking I will twist several of them together when my hair is wet and let it dry, then take the twists out. This is a very cute look, I will have pictures of this hairstyle soon. I also recently did a straw set, which I have known about for a while but hesitated to try once my hair got long. These photos are from
October 2004. I curled my locks using plastic drinking straws. I got tired midway through so stopped; the back of my hair is just hanging. But it came out ok, it all blends together and kinda looks like I did it on purpose. Especially after the first day, the curls/spirals loosened up a bit. I don’t usually do much with my locks except wash and go, throw it in some ‘pony’ tails or whatever, but I decided to try this and realized just how much hair I have. My poor arms got worn out wrapping each lock
around a straw. I do think this is cute but next time I will get some help!
It took close to 4 hours! in part because I was so slow at first, it took me like forever to roll the first one right. I left them in overnight because by the time I got to bed it was way late, I took them out around 9 the next morning. Since I didn’t roll the back of my head I just slept on my back, which was uncomfortable because I usually sleep on my side so I kept forgetting and turning and poking my husband in the eye, LOL. I think next time I will start early in the morning and let it dry all day, then take them out in the afternoon or evening. I wasn’t sure how many straws I would need, I have never counted my locks, so I got 4 packs of 40 for 60 cents apiece. I went through 2 packs before I got tired. They were 7 5/8″ X 1/4″ in diameter.
Also I cut my locks a few weeks ago somewhat, my longest locks in the back were 30 inches. I had cut some off in the front to have more loose hair up front, and got to cutting, and then I washed my hair with black soap and did a hot water soak and scrub which revealed some buildup, my ends looked naaasty. So I cut them. Now my locks are 22-25 inches. I just had to use one straw per loc, I even had some straw left over which I then cut. I secured the straw with a bobby pin on the end and one at the top. I washed my hair beforehand, I didn’t use any setting lotion or anything. Makeup is brown eyebrow pencil, dark grey eyeliner, and Dr. Pepper Lipsmacker in some pics and deep berry red lipstick in others. These first 7 pics were taken with a disposable 35mm camera so excuse the poor quality. I like the last one a lot because it shows how tightly spiraled my locks were the first day.

Straw Set Locks
These pics are from the second and third day after I set my
locks. They were taken with a digital camera. You can see how much
looser the curls got on the third day. The bump under my eye is from a
mosquito bite, I kept scratching it and it got bigger and bigger. br>

Comparing the tightness of the curls, I like day 2′s the best
(and yes, I know I have on the same clothes. I am a writer and kind of
superstitious when I am writing a hot streak; I like to wear the same
clothes. Don’t worry, I wash them every day.)
