I wash my hair once a week. I have been using Dr. Bronner’s liquid peppermint soap for years now but as I have recently learned that it has a little wax in it I may stop using it to wash my locks. You are not supposed to put anything with petroleum in your locks, really in your hair, period. I had been using it so long I never even thought about it, I just assumed it was ok. I have been using Suave Apple scent shampoo until I find a natural hair shampoo that I like.
I use Almond oil to moisturize my hair after washing it. While my hair is still wet I take a teaspoon of it, rub it between my palms, and then work my hands through my locks from close to the root to the ends. I don’t put any oil directly on my scalp, this causes root blockage and build-up, definite no-no. I also use Olive oil if I am out of Almond oil, this is also good for natural hair.
I try to let my locks air dry, but as my hair is very thick and very long this takes several hours. In the summer this is ok, but if it is cold as it often is here in Northeast Ohio I’ll use a hair dryer to speed up the process. I am paranoid about going outside with a wet head in the winter, I get cold enough as it it is without getting popsicle head.

DreadMama,
I need help. I am attempting to start my own dreads and for various reasons ($) I am doing it on my own. I have started with bread extensions and now my hair has grown to about 1 inch of natural hair. I have started twisting them this weekend, but I am concerned that my sections are too small and that my dreads will be very thin and not consistent. Around my face they are smaller and about 1/2 inch to 1 inch sections on top and in back. I would like them to be about your size eventually. My hair is normally very thick, but because of years of perms and extensions it is slightly thin but of extremely course texture. After I twisted the sections are thin, will they eventually become thicker over time? I’m beginning to think I should just leave them alone and let them do their thing. Also, I haven’t washed my hair in a month now and so when do I wash them again after I twist? And will they untwist? I know lots of questions, but I have read and read and read, but am now confused over what to do. I have also been using beeswax to twist, but I also have the jamacianlime lock gel and I also have some Palmers olive oil spray that I diluted, but seemed to be too oily. What types of conditioner should I use also. Before this I thought I was a patient women, but I think that this process will truly be a test of patience for me.
I hope you can help me with this. And also It was your site that has inspired me to go through this journey between me and my hair. Thanks, Yvonne
