Washing Dreadlocks Pics

Here I am immediately after washing my very long and very heavy when wet dreadlocks. I washed my hair/scalp with a thin baking soda and water paste. Then after rinsing thoroughly, I rinshed my hair with apple cider vinegar. Then rinsed it out with warm water. This is a large beach towel and it almost covers all of my locks to their full length. Now, I think I look great sans makeup but how big is my forehead!! Although my skin has yellow/orangish undertones, especially in the winter when my color fades due to lack of sun, I am not this yellow! I have no idea why the pics I take with my phone sometimes look like this, with the yellowish glare. I know, I know, I need to get a decent digital camera again already. See my eyebrows? I shave the ends and then draw a thin line. My kids say it looks wacky but I like it. I need to get a makeover and learn how to do my eyebrows, ha.

The pics with the blue sweater on are my locks after drying from getting washed. To get the wavy effect I made big twists with my wet dreadlocks by taking several bunches of them together and twisting them. Then I let my hair air dry like that., took around 5 hours. Then I took them out and voila! Wavy dreads. Ok! I overdid it on the makeup, LOL. The last pic is one of my curly locks up close. Boing!

  1. hello dread mama.

i’m going through a crisis with my dreads right now. after infrequently moisturizing and not wrapping my head up before bed time for a really long time,i’ve found that my dreads have become so dry that when i twist them they break off at the roots. the back of my head is almost entirely devoid of dreads and i have many ones on the side of my head that are hanging on to about 5 strands of hair each…i don’t really know what i can do..i’ve started moisturizing about every other day now that i realize that my hair is beautiful and i need to take better care of it! i’ve been thinking about chopping them off and letting my hair grow for a while before doing dreads again (ultimately i’d like to keep wearing my dreads). i first got them done at a shop in chicago called mane attraction and the woman gave me some very good advice that i definitely did not heed. do you do hair?!?!or do you know of a shop or place that i could go to in cleveland in order to get my head back in shape?! please and thanks..

  2. I do not have dreads, but I have been natural since 2004. I am so glad to see so many of us opting to keep our hair in its natural state.

    Thanks,

  3. Hi quincy! I’m so sorry about the late reply, I missed seeing your comment. No, I do not do hair but it sounds like you are over-twisting your locks.

  4. Hi Tina! thanks for stopping by :)

  5. Hi Trula,

I found your blog searching the net for how to wash clean my daughter dreads. She has had them since 2 and now 5 as may be imaged I don’t force her to cover her head only at night but she is a terrible sleeper and the head tie ends up anywhere but on her head.

Although I wash her hair every two / three weeks the scalp and roots are clean but did not know how to get the locks clean. And being 5 she is into all sorts and her hair get very dirty.

I have recently had my twists interlocked and my techician mentioned vinginer so I will try it on her. I wasn’t sure at first but lookin at your heathly clean dreads it surely works.

I cannot wait to see the results!

    Thank you.

  6. Hi Juda! thanks for visiting, and you are most welcome. I hope the vinegar rinse helps with your daughter’s hair :)
