I use my locks also to tie my hair up, see:

Trula Hair Bun October 2007

The bandanna is just for decoration, basically. I do my hair in a bun with or without the bandanna. Try taking two dreads on both sides of your head and tying them together. If your locks are long enough to do that, then you can tie up your hair using just your locks. Start with 2 locks or 2 clumps of locks, then 2 more, then 2 more, etc. Eventually you will come to the locks in the center of your head. These you can just tuck into the locks you have tied together.

Another method is to put your locks into 2 big sections, then twist them together. Then take the twist holding the ends and wrap it into a bun. Then tuck the ends under the bun.

Wow, I need to do a video tutorial on youtube!
